Truck Rails
Project I finished for my dad in Feb of 2008. He had a bed vault installed in his truck and it raised the bed of the truck up about 12 inches. He wanted to have some side rails built to ensure that his dog couldn't easily get over the side of the truck. The wood is Spanish Cedar that our cousin, Robbie McMillan (a very accomplished and talented full time woodworker in Valdosta) provided to me to use. I worked on and off for over a year on it a few days or hours at a time whenever I visited my folks in Georgia. Definitely not the best way to get things done in a hurry. However, I am very pleased with how it came out. Most all of my other woodworking is sculptural so having to do something that required so much more precision was quite a challenge. Everything was done by hand except for giving the edges a slight roundover with a router. I also had to fabricate all the hardware to lock the rails in place securely. I hope Max doesn't chew it up like a piece of rawhide.
I always like to take pics as I go when I am working on a big project like this, it helps me to remember what worked and what didn't. It also keeps me from rushing and making more mistakes than I normally would. I will try and put some captions under some of the pics later on so you know what's going on at each stage.
